DINNER AT CHEZ GADO-GADO - A glass of Germany made wine, a plate of an exotic style of Gado-gado a la fine dining, and the breeze of night sea wind among friends was a great idea to spend a night with.

From the hotel I stayed, Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak, Chez Gado-gado restaurant is a couple step away (you may see it on map, it’s indeed a walking distance) but at first I thought the hotel will provide me with a car, but we were three decided to walk because the hotel girl said that the street Is only accessible by walking or motorcycle. So let’s walk, to the right

We walked for about 5-10 minutes between beach clubs on the left and some restaurants on the right, and Chez Gado-Gado is exactly at the end of the road. Typically fine dining experience with the less light and easy listening music (you know, so our other senses can feel stronger, in this case, is the sense of taste). Chez Gado-Gado architecture is very Indonesian traditional Joglo style, with big trees on the terrace while people enjoy outdoor dinner with the sound of the sea.

When we’re at Chez Gado-Gado, why not you ask for a plate of fancy gado-gado? Or I can say fusion gado-gado, in Bahasa Indonesia word term of gado-gado can be mean “everything is there”, but not really ;p. Well, but it made me think that we need vegetables for appetizer right? Then the meat whether from land or sea for the main course, then something fresh and sweet to close it all.

APPETIZER


Tuna: yellowfin / a la Niçoise / free range egg / red bell pepper / haricot verts / baby Roman lettuce / capers / black olives

I thought it was the gado-gado, but then I realized it was not because the Carpaccio style of meat that I always order for appetizer or seafood tartare from fresh crab or prawn meat. But this time is a tuna with fresh veggies. The key for raw food is always in temperature and, of course, must be fresh and this dish represents those keys.

Gado Gado: untraditional / luke warm and pickled vegetables flowers / herbs / crispy coconut crumbs / peanuts

There was a traditional sambal, silk tofu, a lot of exotic veggies, peanut sauce with wasabi, and very strong taste of spices and herbs in it. Although the taste was much different from gado-gado we already know, but I love the taste, I told my friend if I can come back here, I will definitely order this again as my starter because it is like a plate with a hundred possibilities of taste. There is so many possibilities that you can make by mix one vegetable with sauces, one sauce with two veggies, or only two veggies without sauce, I felt like playing and it was so fun, and for those people who love veggies and spices so much, this could be your call to try it.

MAIN COURSE

Beef Tenderloin: pan seared / snow peas / green peas / haricots verts soy beans / shallot / mashed potatoes / own jus


We had tenderloin as the main course, but I can barely taste “it”. Is it because the appetizer or because I have had a best grilled steak the night before at Robert Marchetti: The Plantation Grill? Maybe yes maybe no, the style was very different, one of my friends said that I need to focus on the sauce because the sauce was made from its own quintessence of meat. I made some notes, but no question about the ability to make the steak so tender, but I told you that wine is very essentials to this if you know what I mean; a glass (or two) of the best wine of your choice + beef tenderloin will be a perfect combination.

DESSERT(S) GALORE

Gado Gado Classic: Chocolate melted cake / vanilla ice cream / sugared pecan nuts
Mango: fresh / cremeux / sorbet / mint
Mandarin & Orange: from Kintamani / mousse / frozen yoghurt marinated orange
Black Forest: chocolate brownie / chocolate mousse marinated cherries / blackberry sorbet / whipped cream

LISTEN TO ME! And I guarantee you (and we’re four agreed) that the desserts closed our dinner perfectly sweet with THE BEST lava cake (or the name Gado-Gado Classic) so far on our entire lava cake journey, the plating was so flat but the taste was not real in a good way, this is the best and we keep talk about the lava cake even when we already moved to Tabanan. The level of sweetness and softness was awesome. I wish that it was not just our luck, but when I come back or if you taste it someday, the feeling remains the same; I do not know the better place for Lava Cake because this is my best so far.

That’s all sweet, but if you want some fresh the other three desserts; I was ended up finishing a plate of mango sorbet with mint that totally relaxing to end our excitement for Gado-Gado & Lava Cake madness or you can go sugarless with dark chocolate of Black Forest chocolate brownie with a strong of sourness from blackberry sorbet.
