THE OFFICIAL NAME OF BANGKOK, KINGDOM OF THAILAND'S CAPITAL CITY

THE OFFICIAL NAME OF BANGKOK, KINGDOM OF THAILAND'S CAPITAL CITY - Bangkok is one of the most beautiful and busiest city in Southeast Asia, I love to spend my time in this city especially in old part of the town, along Chao Phraya river. The food, the street food, the nightlife, the sense of classic time, the culture, even the traffic emerges becomes something nice and fun to experience.

I love strolling around the city, and probably about a year ago I just realized that locals, almost never says their city as Bangkok but as Krung Thep (กรุงเทพ). Even when I stayed at Shangri La Bangkok, the newest part of its building called Krung Thep. So what is this Krung Thep means? Turns out that Krung Thep is short official name of Bangkok.

So I try to gain some information about this name, and I was jaw dropping of the full official name or ceremonial name of Bangkok:

กรุงเทพมหานคร อมรรัตนโกสินทร์ มหินทรายุธยามหาดิลก ภพนพรัตน์ ราชธานีบุรีรมย์ อุดมราชนิเวศน์ มหาสถาน อมรพิมาน อวตารสถิต สักกะทัตติยะ วิษณุกรรมประสิทธิ์

In the official English romanisation, this is certified as the longest place name in the world in the Guinness book of records. It's pronounced something like:

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit

The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.

These spectacular over the top names not even in modern Thai language, I heard this name was given by a Brahmana to the King Rama I, for this beautiful new capital city of Kingdom of Thailand in Sanksrit Languange if I am not mistaken. These name is indeed reflect the Bangkok to me as foreigner, all the good names turns to a good prayers for the city of Bangkok or Krung Thep.

I even found song on YouTube that singing full ceremonial name of Bangkok, sang by Thailand singer: Asanee Wasan and recently I am obsessed.
