UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL 2015

UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL 2015 – One of the most precious experience I had in 2015, too many details to tell, I am not sure where’s to start. So Tripanzee and Gagasmedia sent me to this festival because of my travel story to Japan that I submitted to Tripanzee website, I also fortunate to meet Alanda Kariza, the mastermind behind a book Travel Young to enjoy this smartest-intellectual-esque travel ever.

You can call it the biggest literacy event in South East Asia, hosted in one of the most tranquil and peaceful environment of Ubud, but people from all over the world gathered here, and we talk about something taboo (even there so many events got cancelled due to “security reason”), controversial, about politics, art, society, suffer, struggle, happiness, women, religion, freedom, equality, rights, countries, ethnicity, travel, spiritual, lesson, writing, giving, nature, humor, history, pain, sex, satire, tales, so many things that you can believe it or not are my cup of tea to be in the conversation.

Even though I was not very active in ask question, but it teaches me a lot about the new thing that need to be spoken in an open forum like this, even in casual conversation among our group of societies, to our family and friends.

The festival was like the other festival like fashion week when there are 3-4 events in one time you need to choose one that you really want to join, but it was less important here because you are free to go in and out, but perhaps you will lose the context of the discussion. The events from Ubud Writers & Readers Festival 2015 that I was fortunate enough to join are;
  • 1.       Journalism is My Religion
  • 2.       A Fine Line
  • 3.       Why Write
  • 4.       An Imagined Country
  • 5.       In Short Order
  • 6.       Men & Mountains
  • 7.       Passport To
  • 8.       Gateway to Nusantara English Version Book Launching
  • 9.       Movie screening Long Sa’an (Movie Program)
  • 10.   17.000 Islands of Imagination (Art Program)
  • 11.   Story Telling 101 (Youth Program)
  • 12.    The Art of Healing
  • 13.   Papua
  • 14.   Poets of SEA

In 4 consecutive days, I met smart and intelligent people shared and spoke their minds to us, opens up my perspective about what actually happened among our society, about their experiences, their act, their way of thinking etc, very great great unforgettable experience. The festival full of amazing panelists including Raditya Dika, Andreas Harsono, Ayu Utami, Nam Le, Glenn Fredly, Teju Cole, Tony Wheeler, Zakariya Amataya, Rio Helmi, Raedu Basha, Jono Lineen, Janet DeNeefe of course, and so many more on the list.

I also attended my very own friend Ratu Victoria Tunggono's book launching, Gerbang Nuswantara is her first book of the trilogy have translated into an English Version, Gateway to Nuswantara, BIG CONGRATS from me, I have finished read the book and can’t wait for book 2 and 3.

So there are a lot of pictures I took there, you may check it on the deluxshionist facebook page, I wish I can see you again Ubud Writers & Readers Festival.

MASTERING BASICS: MEN'S FASHION ADVICE

MASTERING BASICS: MEN'S FASHION ADVICEWe all know that a gentleman’s sense of style is paramount to the way he presents himself as a man. The old adage that your sense of style is your first introduction is truer now more than ever. To help you put your front foot forward in the fashion world, let’s take a top-down look at the fashion basics.

MASTERING BASICS: MEN'S FASHION ADVICE

Headwear
Wearing hats can be tricky to pull off properly. Many a man has mistakenly worn some sort of celeb-inspired monstrosity. Wearing a hat can become a signature of a gentleman’s attire; ensure you sign your style with something that works and reflects who you are.
The first rule to remember, hats have to have a purpose. Whether that purpose is ‘it’s ruddy cold today’ or ‘this outfits needs something extra’, just make sure it suits you as well.
If it is the functionality of fighting the cold you seek, donning a thick knit fisherman’s beanie will do the trick; but if you are looking for something more Fendi than function, look no further than the fedora, not only does it exude class but it has been tried and tested for decades. Quick tip: make sure the size of the rim is not too big for your face.

Coats
The coat is the chief concern for a complete winter garb; it will protect you from both the wind and rain, but more importantly it adds a dashing weathered elegance not found in summer attire. When picking an overcoat ensure that it covers your sleeves and is big enough to wear a jumper or suit underneath.  The length of the coat should be kept between the bottoms your jacket and your knees, any lower and it look misshapen and untidy.
Something important to note about choosing an overcoat is that it will take the most wear and tear out of all items except your shoes. If you are going to get an overcoat, invest in quality, it will last you much longer, fit better and keep you warmer and drier. A wool-cashmere blended pea coat is a fantastic investment in the future.

MASTERING BASICS: MEN'S FASHION ADVICE

The Suit
So much can be said on this topic, so I will just give you the headline. The fit is crucial. A well-fitted, moderately priced suit is orders of the magnitude better than a poorly fitting expensive suit. If you can’t afford to have one made, get a reasonably priced version and have it tailored. It will cost you a lot less and will look fantastic.

MASTERING BASICS: MEN'S FASHION ADVICE

Jeans& Trousers
In the last few decades, denim has not only become the key component of a man’s wardrobe, but it has become the only bottoms option men seem to own. This is unacceptable. To stand apart from the herds of unfashionable men strolling down the road, opt for the fitted chino. The smart-casual pant plays with the line between chilled and semi-formal; ensuring that they fit properly allows you to take it from the former to the latter with the addition of a nice shirt and blazer.

Shoes
Footwear warrants similar rules to headwear; the purpose for this item is pivotal. Wearing trainers to a restaurant, not okay! Wearing trainers to the gym? Perfectly reasonable. If in doubt, ask yourself this question, do the shoes fit the tone of either the outfit or the event. If not, they’re not the right shoes. Final tip: your shoes should match your belt i.e. brown leather shoes, brown leather belt.

Scottish Wood Craftsman: Sam Chinnery

THE BALVENIE WOLRD OF CRAFTSMANSHIP - In a world of everything fast-paced, the rare technique of handmade craftsmanship seems only applied by an old luxury house or a family business: we struggled on that, struggled to hold this existence. Among people who have style and taste, true craftsmanship is always in their mind. You can find it everywhere - here in Indonesia, we adore everything handmade.

You can see it when you visit Ubud- to see artisans of stone or wood carving and silver jewelers. In every place in Indonesia, they have traditional handmade fabric called Kain Ikat or their technique of coloring and patterning of Batik.

“Handmade” cannot be separated from art and its tradition. The art pieces, like sculptures, woodcarvings, pieces of jewelry, luxury fashion items hold onto tradition.Even a single malt whisky has its very own story. That is what makes art interesting and why we are curious about it - we are curious to learn how they are making their products, and what’s so different about that when compared with another product?

Of course we already know brands like Louis Vuitton and Gucci, we know you can go to Saville Row in London for bespoke suits, but there’s a lot of brands who remain undiscovered –not allowing their business to become too commercial. Although you may hear of them for the first time years after they began, that’s what they want as they hold onto exclusivity.

This said, why not check the new site particularly made to celebrate and support craftsmen, who share this same drive and commitment to their craft.
London bespoke shoe-maker and leather goods specialist G.J. Cleverley & Co.

www.thebalveniecommission.com is a bursary fund created to support craftsmen from all over the world, helping them create bespoke pieces and show true creativity, craftsmanship, and freedom. Once finished, The Balvenie Commission will showcase the pieces and their makers – telling their stories and following the process of each unique creation.

The Balvenie Commission features articles, videos, and photography that bring alive the world of the craft by exploring the lives and works of makers, and provides a global hub for those passionate about making things by hand.

I look forward to seeing creativity and uniqueness of craftsmen and artisan all over the world. Bravo, The Balvenie Commission.

ALAM BERBICARA CONSERVATION.ORG BY DELUXSHIONIST RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL

#ALAMBERBICARA - Our last global disaster, Borneo & Sumatra forest fires although not much cause any casualties, it's just still sad, the victims were not a human, but the victims were the trees, animals that live and support ecosystem in the forest, but if the act of this brutality continues, we will be the last victim.

It becomes my concern that nature and culture must be safe, we talk about our existence and our survival in the world of economy and modernity. We cannot keeping our bad habits and lifestyle and hope everything in the world will be fine, I need to change, we need to change. You can seek so many information about eco-living (not ego-living) and start to think that we are connected, whatever is happening in this Planet Earth are because of us, our demand, our greed, then you will understand. But understand is not enough, we need to act!

I received an email from Conservtion.org, this is what you need to know, if nature could speak, what would they say? No,they will not say "Safe Us"

I am copying you, the release...

CI Indonesia Vice President, Ketut Sarjana Putra said, “Our forests and our seas are the source of life and if kept intact can reduce the impact of climate change. Indonesia needs to adopt innovative sustainable development pathways that value and protect nature. However, this sort of change takes time. First we must raise awareness of the environmental issues in Indonesia, particularly our impacts on global climate change. It is our hope that Alam Berbicara can achieve this.”

“1.5 million hectares of land are destroyed annually and 95% of our coral reefs are highly threatened. The situation could get worse if we don’t act now. We are responsible for excessive nature exploitation and devastation. Indonesia needs a public commitment to maintain nature to attain human welfare. Reducing the rate of deforestation and coral reef bleaching, and building the capacity around sustainable approaches are the main focus CI’s efforts in Indonesia,” said Ketut Putra.

The campaign draws support from various partners, such as the Ministry of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs (MMFA) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MEF). Referring to the collaborative programs between CI and MEF.

Climate Change general director MEF Dr. Nur Masripatin emphasized, “It is important to balance the harmony between Human, Nature and Creators. Man was given with wealthy resources from God. And if Man utilize natural resources and preserve the harmony, there will be no natural damages like todays.”

With a total forest area of 88.5 million hectares (Forest Watch Indonesia, 2011) and 77 marine conservation areas that encompass 15.7 million hectares, Indonesia is home to 250 million people, more than 4,000 animal species and countless plant species.

As a country characterized by its high population and rate of development, and also its rich biodiversity and original forest cover, Indonesia has both the power to influence the impact of climate change and other nations to follow suit. The Alam Berbicara aims to catalyse this thinking by giving nature a voice.

CI’s Integrated Approach to Land and Marine Conservation
CI’s approach is to integrate land and marine conservation so that both ecosystems can remain intact. They believe this cohesion is essential as the land and sea influence each other, because if one is unhealthy the other will be effected.

To support Indonesia’s population growth, careful sustainability planning is required to develop new infrastructure and to ensure the people’s access to food and water. Key to this is nature, as among many things, it provides fresh water for cities and irrigates the farmlands that produce humankind’s food CI’s programs, developed together with the Indonesian government, are designed around this concept and are located all around the country.

“Our conservation approach is to work closely with the people and the government to preserve the environment. We ensure that nature is considered as a key support to infrastructure development, not a barrier. We also ensure that this work preserves key natural areas that reduce the impact of global climate change,” said Ketut Putra.

CI Indonesia’s program is now focused on five provinces, namely North Sumatra, Riau Islands, West Java, Bali and West Papua and each has its own strategy that is integrated and in accordance with the context of local values and cultures.

I just hope after all this we can be more aware to the one and only our living source, nature, the planet earth. That for some people who are having the easy life more aware that our population and next generation needs nature more than anything.

5 simpe things we can do:
1. Keep clean (Throw the garbage to its place)
2. Reduce use of plastic & paper
3. Saving Energy
4. Saving Water
5. Use Environtmentally Responsible Products (Organic, non-GMO products etc)

I know it is not an easy thing to do, but at least you can try, no 1-4 are so easy, right? no. 5 is need an effort, but that's all we can do for survive, the sources used and utilized every second, the users also increases every day. We need to love what makes our life easy, the Nature, our own Mother, Mother Earth!

Seminyak Italian Food @ Double-Six Luxury Hotel Seminyak

EAT @ SEMINYAK ITALIAN FOODThat Morning, when I decided to get my breakfast and see the possibility if “can I take my breakfast pictures? Lol”

I was late, and missed the best spot to take pictures of my breakfast, it was outdoor so you can the best light for photos, but instead, I get the best spot to do whatever I want to do, a square like a classic diner for about 6-7 persons. So if you are staying at Double-Six Luxury Hotel, you will serve by Seminyak Italian Food resto for breakfast, you can choose whether you want breakfast by the pool, or go up 1 level to the Mezzanine floor to get a view or bigger convenient sofa to enjoy your morning fuel.

The design is obvious Italian influenced, with a patterned napkin, big wooden table, with classic furniture, modernized with a touch of glass. The name is indeed Italian, but you still can find other dishes from Korea, Japan, Russia even the Mexico, I believe it happens because Seminyak is one of the busiest place with the most diverse crowds in Bali, so actually Seminyak is never sleeping at all, it is the place of music, fun, party, happy and what the “best” in life, you can find near Seminyak.

The breakfast style is a la carte, so you may find some inspirations or my recommendation here for you.

BREAKFAST DAY 1

I was all by myself, but I was kind of hungry, so I decided to order some mainstream dishes;
Super Omelet and Fruit Salad (watermelon salad with pomegranates seed) other menus were;

Bruschetta Tomato, Mozzarella Buffalo, Basil Dressing & Alfalfa Sprouts
Mushrooms on Toast, Steamed Spinach, Wild & Cultivated Mushrooms, Tofu, Lemon Thyme, Young Greek Basil

I am going with Mushroom on Toast, I don’t know what’s inside it, I mean the herbs they used, but the mushroom tasted so well cooked, I had so much inspired by my last dinner at The Plantation Grill the night before, which the mushroom was so good. I will change the bruschetta because it much looks the same, but it’s yours if you are tomato person, I probably will change it with Double-Six Bircher Muesli or The Korean Bibimbap. But I believe you are free to order anything, but please be responsible for eating everything done.

LUNCH

After soaking myself up in the pool and have some nice sunbathing, I took a shower and went up to the outdoor Seminyak Italian Food at Mezzanine level to feel the peace and wind, peace because it was late lunch & wind because it’s outdoor, 3 PM and just a couple people there to eat. I was thinking to eat pasta and get a really fresh drink. So I ordered:

Entre: Antipasto Frittata
Pasta: Spinaci Tagliatelle con Salmone
Drink: Sangria Orange & Strawberry
Dessert: Casa Gelato

And unfortunately, I didn’t finish the Pasta because I was too full to eat it done because I have a gelato ice cream to enjoy; p. Moreover the portion size was so big, and trust me I do not really eat that much, so I always bring friends no matter what just to eat them done. So that’s why the foodies community, bring 4-5 friends to ordered 1 dish each and gathered all the food in one pic, eat together, pay it together haha.

So if I can fix my order, the pasta should be oily based not creamy, oily like pesto or Aglio olio, even the size maybe the same big. But the lunch menu provides you with so many Italian options, one or two visits will never enough. But the rest, I finished it well, the Casa Gelato was so good, well I said that because I am always an ice cream person, the mixed homemade Vanilla, Pistachio, and Cherry gelato perfectly closed my lunch with joy, loved it.
